VISION BORED

VISION BORED

GRAPHIC DESIGN, BRANDING, DEVELOPMENT

I’m a big fan of self help techniques (super nerdy, I know) but i’m proud to work on improving and bettering myself. One of these bettering techniques is positive affirmations - the action or process of affirming something through repetition. The idea is that if you repeat a statement after so many times you will believe in and act on it. Basically, rewiring the paths in your brain to default to more positive paths than the current, and easier, negative paths.

I started by leaving myself positive notes around the house, and even set reminders in my phone to alert me of them throughout the day. But after just a few days I would start to get banner blindness and wouldn’t pay attention to them anymore, thus losing the effect. And the phone notifications were ugly and truncated the text, rendering the message unreadable.

I decided that if I saw these messages in a more visually appealing format, and made enough of them to rotate through so I always had something new to see, there would be less redundancy and perhaps hold my attention better. It was an excuse to experiment with type and color, and an opportunity to teach myself javascript by creating a Chrome extension to display a random affirmation every time I opened a new tab. This way they kept my attention by not only having an unpredictable positive message, but by being fun to look at and even share with others. And how couuld I turn down an opportunity to have complete creative control over the branding and identity?! I now use this as an exercise to keep me creating new type treatments, as well as updating the affirmations and positivity. PMA all day!
